Two spectacular materials were all that master designer John Varvatos needed to create this work of art. Lava rocks with rich black color dominate the piece, and Italian brass, which offsets the lava rocks and creates a minimalistic counterweight.
Lava rock beads are special for a number of reasons. As the molten volcano rock cools down from a thousand degrees Celsius, it forms lumps that handcrafting artisans shaped into beautiful spherical black beads. You can see up close how different each bead is. Another great aspect is its robust yet lightweight structure. A 24-inch long metal necklace can feel heavy after a long day, but that never happens with this piece.
What truly speaks about the designer’s devotion is that every shade you see is the material’s natural color. There is no coating or painting.
A miniature Italian brass skull gives the piece an underground touch because of its unique handcrafted elements. Its amber-colored surface combines beautifully with the predominating black color of the lava rock beads.
And the versatility of the necklace allows it to be worn as a bracelet as well. You can wrap it around your wrist and get its lightweight form will look as good.
The final touch comes in the form of a fold over clasp, handcrafted using the same Italian brass of the skull bead. In characteristic Varvatos style, it has a miniature skull at the tip and is connected to the necklace with two kettlebell beads.
